How to Choose your First Gym

At the time of writing it's fast approaching the end of 2017. As a gym-based coach I'm seeing numbers at my facility drop drastically as priorities shift and motivation around the holiday period falls short of ideal. In a matter of weeks, however, gyms up and down the country will be crawling with fresh-faced and enthusiastic newbies, all with their own unique set of fitness goals that they've decided that this year will unquestionably be fulfilled.

But with the staggering number of gyms and health clubs out there, how on earth is a newcomer going to decide where all this muscle will be grown, fat will be melted, treadmill miles will be clocked, (INSERT GENERIC FITNESS GOAL HERE)?

Let's take a look at what needs to be considered...

Should we be forcing our partners to get in shape?

We all love our husbands, wives, boyfriends or girlfriends. We depend on them for support when we get into sticky situations and companionship when we feel isolated and alone. Our partners travel the world with us, experiencing countless emotions and situations as a team and, generally speaking, we're super excited about the future we have with them.

So why are we allowing them to slowly kill themselves?

Practise makes...

We all know that in order to get better at something you need to replicate it over and over again. Some experts have even put a number of it and refer to 'the 1000 rep rule' when discussing skill mastery.

The Best 'Beginner' Training Programme in the World...Ever

Exercise newbies are bombarded with information on optimised fitness protocols to maximise their 'gains', whether that be in terms of fat loss or muscle growth. As a beginner, the Internet is both your best friend and your enemy, with endless opinions based on the latest research which ultimately winds up just posing more questions than real answers anyway.

But, for the novice trainee with little experience and perhaps a history of struggling with motivation, there is one fitness programme that far outperforms the rest.

3 Common Barbell Deadlift Positioning Errors

The Barbell Deadlift is arguably the most complete exercise out there. Performed correctly, this exercise can be suitable for everyone, regardless of age, strength or training goals.

The Barbell Deadlift employs multiple large groups of muscles throughout the body, particularly through what's generally termed the 'posterior chain' which comprises the hamstrings, glutes and lower back.

It's a shame, therefore, that many of us aren't getting the most from our Deadlift sets due to poor technical execution.

Here we explore 3 common positioning errors that I see every day. Master these 3 areas and you can be sure that your start position for this incredibly effective exercise is on point.

Netball for All

In association with England Netball, Pete Yardley Health & Fitness recently organised and hosted a very successful and well received mixed gender charity netball tournament in Wolverhampton, raising over £500 on the day.

With an aim to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support whilst breaking down gender-related barriers in sport, everyone involved had a fantastic day and one hell of a workout!

My Job - The 'Entertrainer'

Without the mind getting in the way, exercise, and the process of becoming fitter and stronger is fundamentally very simple.

Over the years those clever clog scientists have done enough research to know what generally works for the majority of the population. We know the basics around what we need to do more of and what we need to limit. However, if you've been living in a cave or would like a quick refresher on some of the simple principles that I teach, here, in no particular order, are a few tips to get you started on a generally healthy lifestyle:

Lazy Gifts Make Us Fat

With Mother's Day rapidly approaching (2 days away at the time of writing) I thought it would be an appropriate time to vent a little on a subject that I feel very strongly about and has been on my radar a lot recently...

Lazy and thoughtless gifts.

Sprout like a BOSS

We all know, but potentially don't love, Brussel's Sprouts. Fortunately, for those of you who aren't keen on these gas-inducing mini cabbages, I'm actually talking about a different type of sprout here. Today I'd like to share my first experience of sprouting mung beans and show you just how easy it is to create something delicious to add to salads and snacks.

Officially a 'Tough Guy'

On a cold, misty day last month, I geared up in my compression tights and neoprene vest and dragged my fatigued, miserable body around what's generally acknowledged as the most challenging obstacle race course in the UK.

Here's my story...

Resolution Revival

Less than a month ago, many of us set new year's resolutions. We promised ourselves that we'd get into shape, reconnect with old friends, make more effort in our relationships, or maybe quit smoking.

How's that working out for you?

The Skinny on Fish Oil Supplementation

Remember as a kid when your Mother or Grandmother shoved a spoonful of disgusting, stinky cod liver oil down your throat each morning? Somehow, I managed to sidestep that landmine but I know it was a routine that many youngsters had to endure. Thankfully, fish oil supplementation has come a long way since then. We now understand much more about the nutritional benefits of consuming these oils and, thankfully, manufacturers have developed their products to become much more palatable. But what do we need to know about fish oil?
